Position Overview: The Trades Helper assists and helps with all routine, standardized, and general trade operations. Performs plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting, welding, roofing, building equipment operation, or automotive maintenance and repair to ensure optimum operation and maintenance of city facilities.

Essential Functions
1 Provides assistance, support, help, and labor for various different trades workers performing work throughout the City and for its facilities; performs mechanical, technical, and general manual labor to support services and experienced workers.
2 Works with painters providing assistance in the preparing and applying of protective and decorative coats of paint and related material to interior and exterior of building and structures.
3 Assists plumber, welder, carpenter, and electrician with any installation, repair, or maintenance work necessary to keep City facilities in full safe and working order.
4 Assists building equipment operator in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning and heating equipment to ensure optimum operation.
5 Provides mechanical assistance to the automotive equipment mechanic in disassembling, cleaning, repairing, adjusting various valves to ensure optimum operation of equipment.
6 Performs roofing and related tasks to ensure facility roofs are in good repair; tears out existing systems and installing new systems.
7 Learns and develops skills based on standards and regulations; adheres to policies, procedures, and safety standards for various trades.
8 Performs any and all other trades work as needed or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION:
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
EXPERIENCE:
- Six (6) months of experience in general building/plant maintenance, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, minor automotive repair and/or construction trades.
LICENSES:
- Valid driver's license with good driving record.
- Some positions require a valid Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) prior to completion of probation.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must pass Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check.
- Subject to evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
- Subject to inclement weather conditions.
Supplemental Information
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position.
Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.
Working Conditions & Hazards:
- Subject to various working conditions associated with specific trade.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting, dragging, and pushing.
- Subject to minor injury to eyes, feet, hands, and fingers and possible serious injury from falls and power-driven tools and equipment.
- Subject to electrical shock and related injuries when performing electrical work and plumbing installations.
- May require working weekends and/or evenings.
- May be on call 24 hours a day.
