Position Overview: The Fleet Management Department is seeking a candidate who can perform scheduled and unscheduled body/frame repairs and modifications on all FMD vehicles and equipment fire apparatus. Prep unit for paint. Refurbish equipment and return to like new conditions. Decal/stripe new units and make ready. Supervise and train less skilled personnel and serve as lead mechanic in the absence of the Shop manager. Must be able to read electrical schematics, vehicle dimension manuals, uni-body and chassis dimension specification charts. Must be able to use manuals and electronic frame measuring system. Must be able to use all body shop related tools and equipment including pulling towers and frame machines. Stay current on new technology and maintain technical skills by continued education. Maintain safe, clean environment and perform other duties as assigned.

MUST FURNISH OWN TOOLS AND SAFETY SHOES.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

There is routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts bruises and minor burns. The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

High school degree, GED or equivalent. Ability to read and understand service, repair, and parts manuals, mechanical diagrams, safety and hazardous materials communications. Intermediate math and computer skills required. Intermediate problem-solving skills. 


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Two-year experience of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience is required. Or Two years of full-time, secondary vocational education in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment (off road) technology. 


LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a valid Texas driver's license and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2). 

Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6-months of employment. 

Must achieve certification as Texas State Vehicle Inspector within 6 months of employment. May be required to achieve an Emergency Vehicle Technician certification


PREFERENCES


PREFERENCES:
Preferences will be given to applicants with ASE Master Certification in body repair or I-Car. Aluminum body sub-structure repair experience in ambulance modules. Fire Apparatus and general fiberglass body repair.

 **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
